Lab tested beer gives the competitive edge
As the craft beer industry continues to grow, quality is becoming the distinguishing characteristic of a successful brewery. Breweries can either estimate alcohol with theoretical equations, purchase or invest in their own laboratory, or pay big for outsourced analysis. However, laboratory start up costs and alcohol testing equipment is expensive. Not to mention outsourcing ABV analysis can cost upwards of $200 per sample including additional shipping costs. Still, both customers and the TTB are demanding high standards of quality and requiring precise metrics.
Stay within federal guidelines
Currently, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has beer label requirements for Alcohol by Volume (ABV) is within 0.3% accuracy. Smaller businesses who have yet to build a quality program can use BrewLab to confirm that their beer reaches these metrics.
Interestingly enough, according to the TTB, in 2013 one fourth of samples tested for alcohol compliance failed. It is no wonder that these rates are so high – ABV testing equipment is expensive, only 14% of Oregon breweries do their own testing.
As a result of ABV testing, breweries are able to make label and recipe changes to better adhere to the 0.3% ABV label tolerance. It is necessary to frequently check and update values due to environmental and commercial fluctuations.
Oregon BrewLab can help get your brewery on a quality path leading to a consistent, sought after product.
